Weaning is a gradual transition from the mother’s milk to a complete growth food. It involves more than placing dry kibble in a bowl. Texture, feeding frequency, each puppy’s or kitten’s access to food, hygiene and weight monitoring all contribute to a successful transition.

To be retained
  • Use a complete food designed for growth.
  • Start with a texture that is easy to laper and then evolve gradually.
  • Weigh every puppy or kitten and monitor access to the food bowl.
  • Maintain a gradual transition to the food given to adopters.
01

1 Make food accessible

Following the veterinary team’s advice and the litter’s development, offer a gruel made with growth food and warm water, then gradually thicken the texture. Use shallow, stable containers that are easy to clean.

Introduce small amounts of fresh water several times a day. Remove the remains quickly to maintain good hygiene.

02

2 Follow each individual

A litter is not uniform. Weigh each puppy or kitten, identify them clearly and record their progress. Watch for any that are pushed aside, tire easily, eat less or have abnormal stools.

The manufacturer's ration remains an estimate. Divide it according to age and number of meals, then adjust with the veterinary team according to growth and body condition.

03

3 Prepare for departure

Avoid cumulating at the same time a change in focus, rhythm and food. Give adopters a sufficient amount of known food, the ration table and a transition method if they want to change.

Explain the difference between complete food, treats and supplements. A written protocol reduces the approximations of the first days.

Frequently Asked Questions

We give you clear, straightforward answers.

At what age does weaning begin?+

The timing depends on species, mother and litter. It must be progressive and followed with the veterinarian rather than set on a single date.

Should we humidify the kibble?+

This can facilitate the first meals. Use warm water, prepare small amounts and quickly remove what is not consumed.
