Pregnancy and lactation are demanding periods that require veterinary monitoring and food suited to the physiological stage. Needs change at different rates in female dogs and cats and also depend on litter size. The aim is to meet those needs without improvising supplements.
- Evaluate the body condition before and during reproduction.
- Choose a complete food intended for growth or reproduction in line with veterinary advice.
- Increase intake gradually according to the physiological stage and litter size.
- Follow the mother and the young with regular weighings.
1. Plan ahead before the birth
Ideally, the female approaches pregnancy with a suitable body condition. Veterinary monitoring allows to check her general condition and plan the transition to an appropriate food. Avoid additions of calcium, vitamins or oils without any indication: excess can also be a problem.
The end of pregnancy sometimes limits the volume available in the abdomen. A more concentrated recipe and split meals can then facilitate intakes.
2 Lactation, a period of high demand
After birth, nutritional needs depend in particular on the number of puppies or kittens and the stage of lactation. Fresh water must always be available. Monitor appetite, weight, temperature, maternal behaviour and the litter’s development.
The recommended quantity on the package is a guide. The veterinarian helps adjust and quickly identify insufficient milk production or a problem in the mother.
3 Organize the transition to weaning
Introduce an appropriate complete food to the puppies or kittens in an easy-to-eat texture without abruptly removing access to their mother. Weighing each animal helps identify one that is falling behind before the gap becomes significant.
Maintain strict hygiene for bowls and the feeding area. Any deterioration in condition, fever, mammary pain, abnormal discharge or refusal to nurse requires veterinary advice.
